Novel antiviral host factors
A productive virus infection in mosquitoes is a prerequisite for the transmission of all arboviruses. Importantly, mosquito-intrinsic factors critically affect virus replication in mosquitoes; however, antiviral responses in these insects are still poorly understood.
Applying reverse-genetics and compound-based screening methods in mosquito cells and in vivo models, we aim to identify new host factors that control mosquito-virus interactions to better understand the molecular mechanisms that drive arbovirus transmission.
Antiviral drugs for mosquitoes
Conventional drug development programs focus on the discovery of active compounds to suppress viral load in infected patients. Given the necessity of active replication in mosquitoes to achieve arbovirus transmission, we explore the use of mosquito-directed antiviral compounds as an innovative strategy to block arbovirus transmission.
